How to tie a fishing hook using San Diego Jam Knot

How to tie a fishing hook using the San Diego Jam Knot. The San Diego Jam Knot is also known as the Reverse Clinch Knot and as the Heiliger Knot. It was popularized in San Diego particularly with long-range tuna fisherman. It is reasonably easy to tie at sea and is suitable for monofilament, braided, and fluorocarbon lines.

The San Diego Jam Knot is intended to be tied to a ring or a hook with an eye on the back end. It is tied by first passing the main line through the eye, and then doubling the free end back over the main line. Next the fisherman wraps the free end around the doubled main line five times, working towards the eye. The free end is then passed through the loop that has formed at the eye, and subsequently through the loop on the main line that was formed by the first wrap. The dampened main line and free end are pulled to snug the knot tight.

Not particularly well known outside of the sport fishing capital of San Diego this knot is an excellent choice for all line types: mono, fluorocarbon and braided. Originated as a quick and reliable way to tie the heavy “iron” jigs by the fishermen chasing tuna on the long-range boats venturing into Mexican waters, it is fast and easy to tie. Make sure the knot is fully set by hooking the lure or jig to a fixed object and pulling hard. Use this knot or the Palomar when fishing with braided line

Instead of presenting here some kind of animation knot, pictures or videos inconvenient for reproducing the knot (as some websites do) we provide demonstration of tying knots using YouTube videos directly by hands. Videos are taking with such angle that viewer is experiencing a full presence in tying process and can actually repeat the creation of the knot by his/her own hands. In many cases we are forming the Knot using colored ropes for better understanding and memorizing of the way how fancy rope work was done. In videos (such as "Fishing Knots Under 30 seconds) we are also demonstrating tying knots in slow motion inviting viewer tying knot together with us.

You can certainly visit our "Popular Knots" directly on YouTube where we created for you convenient playlists presenting knots depending on their use.
